Description

Ovral G is an effective oral contraceptive pill that works to prevent pregnancy, treat irregular periods or heavy flow of bleeding, skin disorders, and is advised for PCOS as well. The medication uses a combination of progesterone – Norgestrel, and an estrogen – Ethinyl Estradiol. These pills work in multiple ways to prevent pregnancy. For these pills to work effectively, tablets should be consumed every day at a fixed interval not exceeding 24 hours. Kindly note that these pills do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases. 

How Does Ovral G Work?

These tablets operate by different methods to prevent pregnancy.

  1. It prevents the egg from releasing during your menstruation cycle, thus eliminating the chances of getting pregnant.
  2. It does not allow the endometrial lining of the uterus to grow, thus making the uterine environment inhospitable for the growth of the fetus. 
  3. It hinders the free movement of the sperm by making the mucus of the cervix thicker.

Who Should Not Take Ovral G?

  • Ovral G is not suitable for women who 
    • Are regular smokers
    • Are more than 35 years of age
    • Are obese
    • Have a history of blood clots, clotting disorder, or stroke
    • Are pregnant and lactating
    • Have a present or history of cardiovascular disease – irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart attack, heart valve disease, coronary artery disorder.
    • Have known allergies to Norgestrel and/or Ethinyl Estradiol.
  • It is to be used with caution in patients suffering from 
    • Hypertension
    • Diabetes
    • Gallbladder diseases
    • Liver problems
    • Kidney disorders 
    • Thyroid issues
  • Intimate your doctor in the following cases: 
    • A history of breast, cervix, or uterine cancer, before using these tablets.
    • An undiagnosed case of vaginal bleeding.
    • Severe migraine 
    • Jaundice because of pregnancy or use of contraceptives 
    • Family or personal history of edema or angioedema 
    • You’re on Hep-C medications that contain ombitasvir, ritonavir, or paritaprevir.

Directions for Use

These tablets can be consumed orally with or without food, the most important thing to remember is to take it on a fixed time at an interval not exceeding 24 hours. For the most efficient results, these tablets should be taken orally every day at a time interval of not more than 24 hours. Start taking tablets on the first day of your period, and continue till you finish the 21 tablets, and then start with the new pack. Do not miss the tablets on any day.

 

Missed Dose?

The efficacy of these birth control pills drops drastically if you miss a dose. However, in case you do, take two pills on the next day and then once daily afterward. In addition, use a condom for the next few days as backup birth control to avoid chances of getting pregnant.

Side Effects

As your body adjusts to the hormonal medication you would feel some side effects that usually go away on their own in a short while. In case you feel any major changes to the body,  consult your doctor.

 

Common side effects include: 

  • Nausea and/or vomiting 
  • Breast tenderness or pain
  • Headache 
  • Light irregular bleeding

  • Blood Clot: shortness of breath, swelling in the leg or arm, sudden vision problems, chest pain.
  • Stroke: severe headache, slurring of the speech, sudden numbness in one side of the body.
  • Heart Attack: sweating, nausea, pressure, or pain in the chest that spreads to the jaw or shoulder.
  • Liver Problem: a yellowing of skin or eyes, fever, upper stomach ache, dark-colored urine, and stool. 
  • Edema of any body part.
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding.
  • Lump in the breast.

Q1. What should be done if I vomit after taking an Ovral G tablet?

  • If you vomit within 3-4 hours after consuming the tablet, it is considered a missed dosage, and once you feel better, take another tablet.

Q2. What to do if I miss a period while on this medication?

  • A missed period could mean you’re pregnant, however, some women complain about missed periods when on this tablet, however, it may mean you might be pregnant. In case you feel like you might be pregnant, contact your doctor immediately. Pregnancy is possible in case the medication is not used properly – consumed every day at a fixed time.
