Description

Cytotec 200 mcg or Misoprostol is an oral tablet that is used in combination with Mifepristone to cause first-trimester abortion (of no more than 9-10 weeks). It reduces the risk of NSAID-induced ulcers, prevents postpartum hemorrhage, and manages miscarriages effectively. It protects the lining of the stomach by lowering the amount of acid and is thus, used for the treatment of gastric ulcers. For the termination of pregnancy, four tablets of Misoprostol are meant to be taken buccally (two pills on either side of the mouth) 24-36 hours after the administration of Mifepristone. It increases the strength and frequency of contractions and decreases cervical tone. For reducing the risk of gastric ulcers, this medicine should be taken for at least 3 months or as prescribed by the doctor.

How does Cytotec 200 mcg work?

Cytotec 200 mcg (Misoprostol) is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that stimulates the prostaglandin E1 receptors in the stomach and thereby reduces gastric acid secretion. When used in combination with Mifepristone 200 mg, it increases uterine contractions and allows pregnancy tissues to be expelled easily. While it may sometimes be used alone to terminate a pregnancy, the combination of both Mifepristone and Misoprostol has found to be effective.

This medicine binds to the stomach cells in the uterine lining to increase the strength and frequency of the contractions. Furthermore, it degrades collagen and reduces cervical tone.

Who should not take Cytotec 200 mcg?

Cytotec 200 mcg may not be suitable for you if you have a pre-existing cardiovascular disease, or:

  1. If you are allergic to Misoprostol or any other prostaglandins.
  2. If you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
  3. If you have an intestinal disorder.
  4. If you are pregnant and taking this medication to decrease the risk of NSAID-induced ulcers.
  5. If you are getting oxytocin.
  6. If you suffer from anemia, diabetes, hypertension, etc.

Directions for Use

Buccal administration of cytotec (Misoprostol)

Cytotec 200 mcg (Misoprostol) is recommended to be taken buccally by placing the four pills in the cheek pouch (two pills on either side of the mouth) for the termination of pregnancy (that is no more than 9-10 weeks). It should not be swallowed directly. Wait for the contents to dissolve. The contents should then be swallowed with water after 25-30 minutes. Bleeding and cramping can be experienced 3-4 hours after the administration of this medication. Make sure you’re in a comfortable place and have a pack of maxi pads with you. 

To get relief from pain that may occur during the process, a single tablet of Ibuprofen 400 mg can be taken 30-60 minutes before administering Cytotec 200mcg. Perform a deep uterine massage and place a heating pad on your belly for relief.

Vaginal administration of Cytotec is not recommended as it can cause infection in some cases.

For reducing the risk of NSAID-induced ulcers, this medicine is recommended to be taken orally, four times daily with food. 

 

Side Effects

Headache

Headache

Headache is a common side effect that occurs after taking Cytotec 200 mcg tablets. Keeping yourself hydrated and taking adequate rest and sleep can help alleviate the symptoms of headache.

Chills

Chills

Chills or shivering is a common side effect of Misoprostol. The body temperature may rise resulting in fever which may cause you to feel cold.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea

After taking Misoprostol, your bowel movements may get disturbed. A churning sensation in the stomach may indicate that there's something bad going on in the stomach. You may experience symptoms of diarrhea. Therefore, you should keep yourself hydrated to prevent dehydration.

Fever

Fever

Fever is a very common side effect of this medication. Any symptom of fever is temporary and resolves spontaneously or goes away after some time. The fever may stay below 100 degrees and last for a day or two. However, if you experience a high fever of more than 100 degrees or a fever that lasts for more than 2 to 3 days, contact your healthcare provider.

Menstrual Cramps

Cramps

Experiencing discomfort and cramping is pretty common after taking Misoprostol. Cramping is necessary for the uterus to return to its non-pregnant size. Cramps may be normal during the first few days. Along with bleeding and clotting, cramps may increase after 3 days.

Nausea

Vomiting and feeling nauseated after taking Misoprostol is common. If you vomit the pills within the first 30 minutes when the pills are placed between the gums and cheek, you'll have to take another dose of the medicine. Your doctor may prescribe antiemetic pills to treat nausea and vomiting.

You may experience heavy menstrual bleeding 1-4 hours after taking the medication. The flow may be heavier than your normal period and may feel like an early miscarriage. It can last for several hours and you may see large blood clots or clumps of tissue during the process.
